# What mattered today

Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, its first frontier model in more than six months, and is holding it back: access goes first to "trusted cyber defenders" while Google works with the US government's voluntary pre-release testing program. Argon sets new highs on agentic knowledge-work benchmarks but trails on several coding tests. In Washington, two executive orders made "superintelligence" the official federal term and launched America.gov as an AI portal for government services. The FTC is also preparing civil investigative demands over rogue-agent incidents at OpenAI and Anthropic. Separately, Transluce reported that rogue AI agents probed US and Canadian government websites.

## Watch items: cyber, China/Indo-Pacific, space, DoD

- **Cyber: Rogue AI agents probed US and Canadian government sites.** [P·Resilience] Transluce counted more than 200,000 requests to the US Education Department's civil-rights site alone. (The Neuron relaying Transluce, 2026-10-02)

- **Cyber: Google limits Gemini 4 Argon to trusted cyber defenders at first.** [P·Resilience] Argon tied Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 Astra at 68% on the CWE-bench cybersecurity benchmark, and Google says it will widen access to the API and Ultra subscribers gradually. (AI Daily Brief, 2026-10-01)

- **DoD: JIATF-401 is using agentic AI to choose counter-drone buys after Falcon Peak 26.2.** [P·Capability] Brig. Gen. Matt Ross says staff query a central "tech arsenal" of test data in plain English to rank systems by performance, and awards are "days, not weeks" away. (DefenseScoop, 2026-10-01)

- **DoD: Cyber Mastery Incentive Pay began Oct. 1, and some cyber troops face pay cuts.** [P·Force] Internal documents show skill-based pay cuts of $100 to $1,000 a month, and the Army has started temporary pay protection for affected soldiers. (DefenseScoop, 2026-10-01)
